How custom ACF blocks make your WordPress site leaner, faster and better for AI search

A better-built website can mean more new business leads

What custom ACF blocks are – and why we use them on every serious WordPress build.

If you have ever logged into WordPress and felt like you were defusing a bomb just to change a heading, you will understand why I care about this.

There are many ways to build a WordPress site. Page builders. Off-the-shelf themes. Frankenstein installs with 40 plugins glued together. We do not build sites like that. We build bespoke WordPress themes using custom ACF blocks – and there is a direct reason why this now matters for AI search, not just for the people managing the site.

What are custom ACF blocks?

ACF stands for Advanced Custom Fields. It is a WordPress plugin that allows developers to create structured content fields inside the WordPress admin. Custom ACF blocks are bespoke content blocks built specifically for your website using ACF and the native WordPress block editor.

Instead of giving you a generic toolbox full of sliders, colour pickers and 200 layout options, we create a hero block that matches your design exactly, a testimonial block with only the fields you need, a case study block structured properly for B2B storytelling, and a call-to-action block that always renders correctly.

Each block is coded into the theme. Not generic. Not recycled from a marketplace theme. Built for your project.

Why do we not use page builders?

Page builders are designed to cover every possible scenario. That means they come loaded with enormous CSS files, heavy JavaScript, design options you will never use, and layouts that encourage tinkering.

For a serious B2B website – where multiple people manage content, SEO performance matters and the site needs to scale – that creates problems. But there is now a further problem: AI search.

AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini don’t render your page. They read the HTML. When a page builder is involved, that HTML is full of wrapper divs, inline styles and JavaScript-dependent content that makes it hard for AI to extract the meaning of a page. A clean ACF block generates clean HTML. The heading is a heading. The paragraph is a paragraph. The schema is in place. AI tools can read it, understand it and cite it.

How custom ACF blocks make content easy to manage.

When the blocks are right, content management is simple. You log in, find the page, open the right block, update the text in clearly labelled fields, and hit publish. No digging through design panels. No fear of breaking the layout. No need for a developer every time you want to change a sentence.

This matters commercially. Marketing teams that can update content quickly publish more content. More structured, relevant content means better search performance – and more opportunities to be cited by AI tools.

Performance, SEO and AI search – why this matters.

A page built with custom ACF blocks generates significantly less code than a page builder equivalent. Less code means faster load times. Faster load times mean better PageSpeed scores. Better PageSpeed scores mean better Google rankings.

But there is something more specific to AI search. Clean, semantic HTML – the kind that a hand-coded ACF block produces – is exactly what AI crawlers need. Proper heading hierarchy, clean paragraph structure, schema markup baked into the template. This is what gets you cited.

We have seen Google PageSpeed scores jump from the 30s to the high 90s when rebuilding page builder sites into bespoke ACF block builds. That is not a coincidence. It is the natural result of removing bloat.

A real-world example.

Take a services page. On a page builder, a services section might involve a grid widget inside a section container inside a column layout, each with their own CSS classes, inline styles and JavaScript dependencies.

On an ACF block build, it is a single block with defined fields: icon, heading, short description, link. The template renders clean HTML. The output is readable by any developer, any search crawler and any AI tool.

Why we use them on every serious build.

Custom ACF blocks are not the easiest or cheapest way to build a WordPress site. But they are the right way to build one that performs – in search, in AI, and for the people managing it day to day.

Every website we build uses this approach.
