Membership and club management on WordPress.

A custom built site to enable FulonTri to manage their triathlon club

What did Ful-on Tri need?

Ful-on Tri is a UK triathlon club running a surprisingly complex operation. Five membership tiers, event bookings, a shop selling physical and virtual products, training camp deposits, GPX routes and a growing content operation. The existing site was not coping.

Sports clubs look simple from the outside. In practice, a well-run triathlon club manages a lot: annual and monthly memberships at different levels, kit and merchandise, downloadable training plans, event bookings, training camp coordination and a constant stream of communications, results and content for its members.

The existing site was not reliably supporting any of that. Membership management was limited, ecommerce was either absent or difficult to use, and the platform required too much technical intervention for routine updates. The club needed something that could handle the full operational picture without breaking and without requiring a developer every time something needed changing.

The brief was a functional rebuild: keep what worked structurally, improve everything else, and build a platform the club committee could run themselves.

What the site needed to do:

  • Manage five membership tiers reliably – sign-ups, renewals and member access all handled through the platform
  • Handle ecommerce across physical products, virtual products, deposits and event bookings
  • Support downloadable assets including training plans and GPX routes
  • Give the club committee full control over content and operations without developer support
  • Build SEO foundations to support future marketing activity and local member recruitment

Our approach

Project overview

A functional rebuild for a UK triathlon club. Existing branding and structure retained where appropriate. Bespoke WordPress and WooCommerce platform built to handle five membership tiers, physical and virtual ecommerce, event bookings and downloadable assets – all managed by the club committee.

Design

  • Existing branding retained – logo, colours and fonts carried through into the new design
  • Look and feel evolved for improved clarity and consistency across all page types
  • Design decisions informed by club-supplied content throughout the build process
  • Responsive across all modern devices – members access the site on the go

Membership and ecommerce

  • Five membership tiers managed through WooCommerce – sign-ups, renewals and member access all handled in one place
  • Physical products: club kit, water bottles, hats and merchandise
  • Virtual products: training plans and downloadable assets including GPX routes
  • Deposits for training camps and bike boxes, plus event and activity bookings

WordPress build

Bespoke build on our own custom starter theme. Purpose-built ACF content blocks give the committee full control over pages, news, event listings and club content without technical support. The platform is structured to accommodate new content types as the club’s activities expand – additional events, new product lines, more routes and downloadables.

SEO and growth

SEO is a new focus for the club. Page titles, meta data and internal linking built in and configured from launch. Technical foundations support future paid advertising and social campaigns aimed at local member recruitment. The platform is ready for growth activity when the club is ready to invest in it.

Technical details

WordPress theme

Built on our own bare-bones WordPress starter theme. No inherited styles, no third-party framework dependencies, no bloat. Before any design work goes in, we run the blank theme through Google PageSpeed Insights and aim for 100 out of 100 on both mobile and desktop. That standard applies to club sites as much as it does to enterprise platforms.

WooCommerce

Memberships, physical products, virtual products, deposits and event bookings all handled through WooCommerce. The product mix here is more varied than most – kit and merchandise alongside training plans, camp deposits and GPX route downloads. WooCommerce handles all of it through a single consistent platform the committee manages themselves.

Plugins

We keep third-party plugins to a minimum. This site uses ACF-powered content blocks edited in the Gutenberg editor. The default WordPress block library was disabled entirely – editors can only use the purpose-built blocks we created, which means every page is built consistently and on-brand regardless of who published it.

Accessibility and SEO

Accessibility best practice applied throughout. SEO configured from launch – page titles, meta data and internal linking all in place. The platform is ready to support paid advertising and social campaigns for local member recruitment when the club decides to invest in that activity.

Why WordPress and WooCommerce were the right platform for Ful-on Tri.

David (Dave) Foreman - MD at Toast Design Consultancy Limited

Sports clubs look simple. The operational reality of running one is not.

Ful-on Tri needs to manage five membership tiers with different pricing and access levels. It needs to sell club kit and take payment. It needs to sell training plans as downloadable products. It needs to take deposits for training camps and bike boxes. It needs a booking system for events and sessions. It needs to publish news, results and content for an active membership base. And all of that needs to be managed by committee members who are not developers.

No dedicated sports club platform handles that breadth reliably without either costing a lot in ongoing subscription fees or imposing its own limitations on what the club can do. WordPress and WooCommerce handle all of it – memberships, physical products, virtual products, bookings and deposits – through the same admin interface, on a platform the club owns outright.

The open-source argument matters here for the same reason it matters for charities and non-profits. A sports club does not want to be paying platform fees indefinitely or risk its site disappearing if a SaaS provider changes its pricing. WordPress is genuinely owned by the organisation running it. The site is an asset, not a subscription.

The committee can manage everything themselves. New events go up without calling us. New kit is added to the shop. Training plans are updated. Routes are uploaded. The site works because the platform underneath it was built for exactly this kind of operational complexity.
