What did Ethical Food Company need?

Ethical Food Company works with partners across the global food supply chain, supporting high standards and ethical practices. They had no website. They needed one that explained what they do without losing people in the complexity of it.

The food supply chain is not a simple thing to explain to someone who has just landed on your homepage. Ethical Food Company works across producers, customers and consumers at a global level, with a purpose and a set of values that are central to everything they do – but that can easily become abstract if not handled carefully.

The brief was to build a digital presence from scratch: no existing site to migrate, no established content to work from. Just a business that needed to introduce itself clearly and credibly to clients, suppliers, partners and potential employees – some of whom would understand the industry deeply and some of whom would not.

There was also a practical dimension. The team was new to managing websites. The site needed to be something they could take ownership of themselves from day one, without ongoing developer dependency for routine updates.

What the site needed to do:

  • Communicate a complex purpose and set of values clearly to a wide range of audiences
  • Establish the business as a credible, purposeful operator in the global food supply chain
  • Orientate clients, suppliers, partners and potential employees quickly without overwhelming them
  • Give a team new to website management a platform they could update independently from launch
  • Lay proper SEO foundations for future visibility, even though search was not the initial priority
  • Provide a strong digital foundation for future marketing, recruitment and growth

Our approach

Project overview

A new build from scratch for a purpose-led food supply chain business with no previous digital presence. Content-first approach – we took responsibility for shaping site structure, page hierarchy and user journeys, working closely with a small internal team throughout.

Content and structure

  • Approximately ten core pages covering purpose, services, team, knowledge base and contact
  • Structure kept deliberately focused – clear enough to understand quickly, with room for future growth
  • User journeys designed for different audience types – clients, suppliers, partners and potential employees each have a clear path
  • Strong imagery and clear messaging used to orientate visitors quickly without losing them in industry complexity

Design

  • Existing brand elements – logo, fonts and colour palette – inform the visual direction throughout
  • Layouts designed to feel confident, clear and credible for a business operating at a serious level in its sector
  • Full design process from concept to approval – nothing was templated or generic
  • Responsive across all modern devices from launch

WordPress build

Bespoke build on our own custom starter theme. Purpose-built ACF content blocks give the team full control over every page – no technical knowledge required for routine updates. For a team launching their first website, that independence matters from day one.

Hosting, email setup and ongoing management guidance provided as part of the handover so the site is reliable and secure from launch.

SEO foundations

Search was not the immediate priority, but the site was built with clean foundations for when it becomes one. Clear page hierarchy, proper page title and meta data support, and a structure that can accommodate future content marketing without restructuring. The platform supports both search visibility and use in printed and offline marketing materials.

Technical details

WordPress theme

Built on our own bare-bones WordPress starter theme. No inherited styles, no third-party framework dependencies, no bloat. Before any design work goes in, we run the blank theme through Google PageSpeed Insights and aim for 100 out of 100 on both mobile and desktop. That discipline is what makes the performance scores possible.

Plugins

We keep third-party plugins to a minimum. This site uses ACF-powered content blocks edited in the Gutenberg editor. The default WordPress block library was disabled entirely – editors can only use the purpose-built blocks we created, which means every page is built consistently and on-brand regardless of who published it.

Content management

For a team managing a website for the first time, the editing experience matters as much as the site itself. WordPress gives the Ethical Food Company team a genuinely straightforward CMS – pages updated, knowledge base content added, team profiles managed, all without any technical knowledge required. The site grows with the team rather than waiting for them to catch up.

Hosting and setup

Hosting, email setup and ongoing management guidance all provided as part of the project handover. For a business launching its first website, those details matter – a site that goes live without reliable hosting or clear guidance on how to keep it running is not a finished project. This one was.

Why WordPress was the right platform for Ethical Food Company.

David (Dave) Foreman - MD at Toast Design Consultancy Limited

When a team manages a website for the first time, the platform they are given either sets them up or holds them back.

Ethical Food Company had no previous website and no previous experience of managing one. That is not unusual for a business at this stage. What it means practically is that the CMS they launch with will shape how they think about their website for years – whether they see it as something they own and control, or something they are vaguely afraid of breaking.

WordPress done properly is genuinely approachable for a non-technical team. The ACF content blocks we build give editors a structured, predictable editing experience – they see their content in context, they cannot accidentally break the layout, and they do not need to understand code to make meaningful updates. For a small team with a lot of other things to manage, that matters.

The other argument for WordPress here is longevity. Ethical Food Company is at an early stage. Their content needs will change as the business grows – new services, new partners, a knowledge base that expands, a recruitment section when the time comes. WordPress accommodates all of that without the site needing to be rebuilt. The structure is already there. They just fill it in.

Wix or Squarespace would have been quicker to launch. They would also have imposed limits that a business with this kind of ambition will eventually hit. WordPress does not impose those limits. The platform grows with the business.
